SAD BUT TRUE.
I read about Kevin Mahoney’s death on a tumblr (theguiltyhavenopride) and I was a bit shocked. Usually these things don’t affect me, but Siege were very special to me. I remember going to Vort n Vis fest back in 2001 or 2002, and seeing the revoltation boot at some store distro who was selling it for more money that I thought was ethical to spend on a record.
My girlfriend at that time thought I loved and wanted that piece of plastic too much not to have it. The record and I were meant to be togehter. So she decided to liberate it from the claws of the capitalist oppressor store owner and I got that record as a birthday present, if my memory serves me right. And it was the first record I owned that could be considered “rare”, I guess.I’m not sure how or where I got the split with Deep Wound, but I do remember loving it to death, and always saying Siege were the best band from MA. I could argue that with myself today, but playing both records now, I’m thinking they win over J Mascis’ Deep Wound, or SS Decontrol, or DYS, maybe not Jerry’s Kids or Choke’s NFX/Last Rights… what the fuck! they do!!What is undeniable is that no one at that time recorded anything as aggressive as those sessions. I will always chose the three tracks off Pushead’s Cleanse The Bacteria, for being the fastest and ugliest shit but still catchy as hell. I find myself singing Cold War, Sad But True, Walls or the bass line on Conform every now and then. For all these memories, thanks Kevin, rest in peace.
