”(…)known for his iconoclastic, ironic, outspoken, and polemical (but always humorous) musical style. He was also known for his habit of lightheartedly missing appointments and even important gigs.” That’s what wikipiedia has to say about Tim Maia, and that’s more than enough to make it to the list of All The Madmen.
I’m thinking it was around 2005 when I set up a tour for Brazilian fastcore band Discarga. We rented this small van and went for a couple weeks around the Spanish state and Portugal.
They wouldn’t stop playing Tim Maia’s Racional, and at first I was a bit confused. If you are a punk, you are supposed to listen to punk. I wanted to play the rawest shit while driving on the road, not this music that my dad could like. Well, by the end of the tour, I pretty much knew all the songs. And I can hardly listen to hardcore when on tour these days.
During this period Tim Maia was part of some cult, and he keeps saying in his songs to read the book “Universo Em Desencanto”, and that’s some extra points for madmenness.
